Disney’s Wall Climbing Robot

Disney Hits Us with More Magic – A Wall Climbing Robot

A wall climbing robot?  I am one of the people who is looking forward to more robots in our society. Disney has created something really awesome! Check out Disney’s wall climbing robot, dubbed VertiGo,  in the video after the break. Not only does this robot climb walls but it gets on the wall by itself!

As the Paul Beardsley, Disney research scientist, states in the article at Boing! Boing! he is not at liberty to go into all the details about Disney’s plans for the bot, but it takes little imagination to imagine how it could be used with lights and/or cameras on it.

Furthermore, it does not take much imagination to think of how useful this type of technology would be outside that area of movie making. Watching the video, it seems like this robot can navigate pretty much anything.  It travels across grass, pavement and up a wall.  I wonder if it could be used as a delivery vehicle in drone-free zones. It also seems to be pretty quiet so it won’t have the issues of the LS3.

It also seems to be pretty quiet so it won’t have the issues of the LS3.  The LS3 is an acronym, the military has an acronym for everything. In this case, it is short for Leg Supported Squad System, a robotic pack mule developed for military use.  While able to carry 200 pounds and a great idea, the robotic mule made so much noise that the Marines “put it out to pasture” fearing it would compromise their position.

What I would really like to know is exactly how it works. Check out the video below and I think you shall agree. It doesn’t seem possible. It literally rolls up and around the wall. How does it stay on the wall?
